Greetings folks, it’s once again Wednesday and you know what that means? Yes, it’s maintenance day once again. Where did the week go? I must be getting older because time is flying by way too fast.
Things finally seem to be settling down as we’re back to the normal maintenance routine of downtime between 5am and 7am CEST. Of course, our poor American brethren were once again in guinea pig mode. They experienced a rather lengthy period of extended maintenance yesterday afternoon so, as usual, don’t hold your breath.
As if anticipating the whiff of downtime, Daniel W. compiled a rather extensive list of things do to during the (hopefully short) downtime. See y’all when the servers come back up!
Update: All the servers seem to be back up a bit earlier than anticipated. However Blizzard have posted a note concerning ‘technical difficulties’ relating to the login/authentication servers and promise they’re looking into it. Hopefully the problem will be fixed pretty quickly but if you find yourself unable to get into Azeroth, that’s why. All you can do is keep calm and carry on, folks.

I don’t want to invoke BTPNTC again, but it’s a common perception that one of the goals in class balance in Wrath has been to bring the damage various DPS specs more in line with each other. This, in turn, has raised questions like “if a feral druid does as much damage as a rogue, what’s the point of the rogue?” This question is arguable, but fortunately, that lovable crustacean Ghostcrawler has laid bare the developers’ goal for how the classes should be positioned relatively in terms of DPS.
Here it is:
Hunters, mages, rogues, and warlocks.
Everyone else.
It’s important to note that the gap between 1 and 2 is meant to be quite small, and that it will probably be swallowed up by gear, player skill, and the particulars of individual encounters in most cases. As GC puts it, “If you know your class cold, I mean really know it, then there is no reason you can’t be topping meters.”
I think this is a good design goal. The pure classes have a slight edge, but skilled players of any class should do well. Of course, we’re not quite there yet, class balance being a perennially moving target, but they’re working on

Every Monday Scott Andrews contributes Officers’ Quarters, a column about the ins and outs of guild leadership.
Lately there’s been a big discussion about the exact nature of the proc on Val’anyr and which class should get it. Bornakk finally stepped in and explained how the legendary mace works. What people don’t know is that the actual fragments also have a mysterious proc: “Chance when picked up: Increases drama rating by 500.” This proc is so powerful, in fact, that just one fragment can send a guild’s entire healing team into an emotional tailspin. In this week’s e-mail, the blessing of an unexpected fragment from a guild’s first Ulduar kill quickly becomes a curse.
Hi Scott,
I’ve been raiding with the same guild now for close to a year. Started out as a PUG healer doing Zul’Aman. And have since worked myself up to an officer and a raid leader. Our guild has steadily progressed through all the Wrath 10-mans, eventually clearing Heroic Naxx. This week we decided we were ready, and go try Heroic Ulduar.
It was supposed to be just a fun exercise to test the waters, so to speak. We got through Flame Leviathan

HARROW: I know him. And I think he’s a psychotic lowlife.
MAL: And I think calling him that is an insult to the psychotic lowlife community.
– Firefly, “Shindig.”
Another OverAchiever, another Firefly quote. I wonder how much of the series we’ll manage to get through here before we finish off Glory of the Hero, because this is one looooooong meta. Having gotten through Azjol Nerub and Culling of Stratholme two weeks ago with a few breaks for holiday achievements along the way, it’s time to hit Drak’Tharon. Next week we’ll be tackling Gun’Drak (which, as Amanda observed this morning, contains one of the more frustrating achievements). Live trolls, dead trolls, undead trolls, we got your trolls right here, pal.
DRAK’THARON KEEP
Consumption Junction
This has a tendency to confuse players because most aren’t aware that Consume even exists (and I was among them; my group got this achievement entirely by accident). Consume is a buff that Trollgore gains based on how many things — NPC or player — are within his line of sight when he casts it. The adds that run down the stairs toward him? Any of your

MMO-Champion put up an update for its Tier 8 listings today, including some high res screenshots showing off the high res skins, and a video of all of the sets. Most of this is stuff that we’ve seen before, but some of it is new. New and wonderful. I’m really not a fan of the Paladin set this time around, but there also seems to be a robe version which I like much better. It’s still pretty awful on Females, though. Again, I ask, why in the world did they bring midriff back on tier sets? Leave that to the greens and blues!
We’ve also started to see stats for some of these sets on the PTR, but not many. A lot of the raid items that are becoming available on the PTR haven’t actually had their stats adjusted from the Tier 7 items they were copy-pasted from. In this case, the Warrior set that we’ve seen is from Ulduar-10 and shares stats with gear from Naxxramas-25. That might actually be a pretty accurate indicator of what it will be on live, with maybe a little extra tweaking upwards to make the 10-man still useful for people who did Naxx-25 previously.

New around here? WoW Rookie points WoW’s newest players to the resources they need to get acclimated. Send us a note to suggest a WoW Rookie topic.
It doesn’t take keyboard gymnastics to prevent your account from getting hacked. As a new player, you’re bound to be concerned – and if you do any digging at all, you’re also bound to uncover a tangle of acerbic, rather arcane-sounding comments (many of them on posts right here at WoW Insider) about what operating systems, browsers and browser add-ons are most secure.
You really don’t have to change your entire computer system simply to keep your WoW account safe. This week, WoW Rookie rounds up a selection of WoW Insider posts that show you how (and why) to keep your WoW account from being hacked and prevent your computer from spilling its beans to the world at large.
Account security basics
Although this older WoW Rookie post doesn’t contain information on newer security measures such as the Blizzard authenticator key, it does a good job at reviewing the routine steps you should be taking to protect your World of Warcraft investment. Find about about creating a strong password, how to

Addon Spotlight takes a look at the little bits of Lua and XML that make our interfaces special. From bar mods to unit frames and beyond, if it goes in your Addons folder, we’ll cover it here.
Buff smart: use SmartBuff. This addon is pretty comprehensive and crazy configurable, and is designed to facilitate and partially automate the buffing process. Here’s how it works:
Check off which buffs you want to keep up, on what classes, main hand/off hand (if applicable), and when you want it to remind you (in combat, out of combat, 10 seconds remaining, etc).
Under the specified conditions, SmartBuff will put a reminder up on your screen (also configurable, of course) telling you who needs what buffs.
Now simply click the SmartBuff button, or scroll your scroll wheel (if you have that option set), and the necessary buffs will magically be applied for you!
It doesn’t get much easier than that. SB also supports setting up profiles, for PvP vs. raids vs. parties, for instance.
I do have a few minor gripes about SmartBuff. It would be nice if it could recognize when I was on a vehicle, and stop bugging me for buffs under those conditions. Sure, “/sb

Happy Tuesday Morning, everyone. We’re expecting a short downtime this morning, 5 AM – 11 AM Pacific. Patch 3.1.2 probably won’t go live quite yet what with the new build on the PTR, so hopefully this will be a relatively smooth downtime. As always, the downtimes is great time to catch up on the news from the past week, and there were a few good stories that broke over the past 7 days.
The biggest news was the epic tale of Karatechop. From Armory sleuthing, we discovered that he’d been one-shotting Ulduar thanks to a GM Item. Blizzard shut down his account and the accounts of most of his guild, and he talked to us about it. The debate on what he should have done rages on. Of course, if you’ve had your fill of Martin Fury, we have more for you to browse:

Oh yeah, that whole Children’s Week wow goldthing is going on, too. You’ll want this guide to the achievements. And since School of Hard Knocks is sort of annoying to everyone involved, you’ll probably want this seperate guide to that achievement.
Lowered Expectations has a pretty insightful interview with Ghostcrawler.

In the spirit of Children’s Week, Jahzina of <Archaic> on Trollbane sent us this lovely picture of her Argent Squire’s vacation in Grizzly Hills. Man, the treatment of children in Azeroth is horrifying. First we bring them into war zones, then we force them to watch as we eat delicious treats and don’t share, and now we’re up to abandoning them in the woods to be mugged by psychotic loners while we watch from our flying mounts and laugh? Why would we do such things to these poor, defenseless youngsters? They would be put to much better use as human shields during raids. No wow golddeath animation = easy-mode Undying achievement.
Do you have any unusual, beautiful or interesting World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We’d love to see them on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wowinsider.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!
Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. Please include the word “Azeroth” in your post so it does not get swept into
