Artwair complains over on the forums that there is cooking required for the What a Long, Strange Trip It’s Been achievement (that some of you have done — grats! — and others of you are deciding to do in the next year), saying that something as significant as leveling up Cooking all the way shouldn’t be required for what is basically an optional achievement. But Kisirani replies with as good an answer as you’ll find: the achievement is designed to send you all over the world, including to some professions and abilities that you wouldn’t be leveling otherwise. Especially because the achievement is optional, it’s not out-of-place to ask for some cooking to happen. And I’ll add that cooking is worth leveling anyway — not only does it get you some nice buffs, let you use up some of the trash collecting in you bags, and hook up your guild or raid with some excellent items, but it’s pretty easy to do, especially if you do it with fishing (which is also very useful by itself).
While she’s at it, Kisirani also provides a nice tease at Pilgrim’s Bounty, which isn’t a part of the big meta-achievement anyway,

The webcomics community seems like a pretty cool bunch, specially when they all pitch in and help each other out. One of my favorite webcomics, PvP Online, often features guest artists to fill in for creator Scott Kurtz when he’s away at some convention or just down with some bad bug. Just recently, he coralled the immensely talented Ramón Pérez, the genius behind Kukuburi, to do a guest strip while he was down with the flu.
That’s nice, you say, but what’s this got to do with World of Warcraft? Well, see, Gabe from Penny Arcade (aka creator Mike Krahulik’s alter ego) apparently picked up some kind of bad bug during their PAX or Penny Arcade Expo, and some well-known comic folks such as Bill Amend and Kris Straub stepped in to help. The highlight is that World of Warcraft’s art director, Samwise Didier, the man largely responsible for the look and feel of many of Blizzard’s games also pitched in his contribution.
It has nothing to do with our favorite game, but it’s freaking Samwise doing a freaking Penny Arcade strip! I mean, I don’t really have to explain why I’m posting this, right? One of our favorite WoW icons doing

We received a lot of submissions from various Pirate’s Day celebrations yesterday, but Richard’s picture was by far the most … glittery. He didn’t provide much information, but this appears to be an Alliance party at the pirate ships down south of Booty Bay. You know, the area where you get repeatedly killed by respawns, running pirates, and magical teleporting buccaneers who spot you through the walls of ships. Fun times.

Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wow.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!
Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. Please include the word “Azeroth” in your post so it does not get swept into the spam bin. We strongly prefer full screen shots without the UI showing — use alt-Z to remove it. Please, no more battleground scoreboards, gold seller ads with dead gnomes any race at all, or pictures of the Ninja

It’s been a while since we had one of these, isn’t it? Right? Right. Anyway, Veldugar of Hydraxis writes, “So my in-game graphics completely geeked yesterday and I spent a couple of hours flying around taking pics of all of the misplaced textures and just plain weirdness that happened. There are three things in this shot: me on my drake, the outline of the mountains and the sky. All of that craziness is what the entire sky ended up looking like in Icecrown. I have no idea where the tree branches came from since there aren’t any trees in that zone.”

We’ve talked about Internet addiction before a few times here on the site, but it’s always been through the lens of the media. Certainly there are players of WoW and other games out there who play the game so much it’s affecting their lives, but most of the cases we’ve heard about have been a little over the top — parents crying that their children are lost, kids playing nonstop and picking up bad health and social habits from this horrible game.
And so, when we heard that there was a new center opening for Internet and gaming addiction in Washington State, we decided, instead of just listening to the media reports, to sit down with the co-founder herself and have a more thoughtful conversation about gaming addiction: how and why it happens, how they’re trying to fight it, and how it’s portrayed, from both a media and a gamers’ perspective. Dr. Hilarie Cash has been working with Internet addicts for 15 years — she’s the cofounder of two different addiction clinics, including the new reSTART Center, and the co-author of “Videogames & Your Kids: How Parents Stay in Control.” You can read our exclusive

Ghostcrawler has announced that armor penetration (ArP) is being nerfed in the upcoming Patch 3.2.2. It’s an early notice to players who plan on investing in armor penetration gems. Many raiding melee players (along with Marksman hunters apparently) have begun focusing exclusively on armor penetration without caring about other stats. While the mechanics of ArP can be complicated to understand, the basic understanding is the more ArP you have the more damage you deal. Heck, a Feral Druid in my guild has been known to pass on upgrades here and there primarily because it lacked ArP.
Again, this is mainly a nerf to PvE raiding but it could end up affecting PvP slightly as well. It’s not expected to completely rock the arena world or anything. The worst thing that could happen is Priests (or other soft targets) like myself will survive a few seconds longer against melee heavy teams, or people like Rogues have it worse against Plate. I guess from my perspective it could be viewed as a buff!
Note that in Cataclysm, armor penetration will be removed as a stat as it has been deemed confusing in regards to its use.

Reinisch is the pacifist Undead Priest who’s aiming to make it to level 80 without killing anything at all (he’s the same player as Noor, who we interviewed way back when and followed up with a while ago), and apparently this Friday, he’s going to do it. He’s inviting everybody out to a party on Friday afternoon, September 4th, at 6pm server over on The Venture Company. He’s going to turn in a Dalaran fishing quest to do it, and he’s got quick and easy directions posted on how to get to Dalaran as a level 1.
Though there might not be as much going on as other big server parties, it’s probably worth going just to see him ding level 80 and the level 1 chaos in Dalaran that will ensue, but it’s quite an achievement for sure, especially considering that this Priest was actually created before Noor — he’s named after a German priest who stood up to Hitler in the name of peace and was executed for it. It might be nice just to stop by and give the guy a grats as he dings — pretty impressive to take a goal that most people would say was impossible, and do it in the game not once but twice on two different classes and
